10 years of ekosystem.org (3/3)

En décembre 2006 Woostercollective organise «11 Spring Street», la scène New Yorkaise – et quelques autres- est invitée à s’approprier un bâtiment abandonné. La couverture médiatique est importante et de très longues files d’attente de visiteurs ne tardent pas à se former devant l’entrée. Après la mode et les magazines branchés, le mouvement va désormais investir le marché de l’art. La cote de Banksy ne cessera de monter. Des conférences sont organisées un peu partout pour parler du street-art par des professeurs d’histoire de l’art, des galeristes, et divers spécialistes autoproclamés. J’ai le sentiment que le mouvement n’appartient plus tout à fait à ses créateurs.
– L’impression de stickers se professionnalise et des sites spécialisés comme lastickerie apparaissent.

– Quelques artistes qui marqueront cette année sur ekosystem: Wayne Horse, Sam3, R, Mosone, Raisin/B2M, ZonenKinder, Another Brixia, Ioke42, egotrip, Lksir, Chu-Doma crew, M-City, Claudio Ethos, 0331C, Bros, Escif, Uri, Muro, Celso, Pekmez, SpY, JeanSpezial, Bonom, M.defeo, Ripo, Labrona, Ovni, Vagabundos, Above and his Euro tour.

In December 2006 Woostercollective initiates the event “11 Spring Street”, the New York scene -along with a couple others- is invited to take control of an abandoned building. The media coverage is important and long queues of visitors begin to take shape in front of the entrance. After the world of fashion and trendy magazines, the movement is now about to invest the art market. Banksy’s quotation doesn’t stop from climbing. Conferences are organised quite everywhere to talk about street-art, with art history teachers, gallery owners and a bunch of self-proclaimed specialists. I get the feeling the movement no longer really belongs to its creators.

As Barcelona is on the decline, Berlin becomes the most exciting city in Europe. Just is on every good opportunity, take pictures of everything interesting and as soon as the pics are processed; he publishes them on ekosystem’s newsgroup.

La répression et une politique de nettoyage systématique se mettent en place à Barcelone, c’est la fin d’une époque. Berlin reste sans rivale avec ses gros événements comme Urban Affairs cette année là.
Ekosystem commence à héberger des blogs. «BCN Style» sous l’impulsion d’Uri décrira cette période de transition pour Barcelone.
Les discussions disparaissent du forum, et se déplacent progressivement vers les blogs, avant de basculer sur les réseaux sociaux.

La Tate Gallery organise une exposition où Blu, Faile, Jr, Nunca, Os Gemeos et Sixe sont invités à repeindre l’immense façade du musée. La couverture médiatique est énorme. Le Street-art est partout. La moindre action de Banksy est relayée par tous les medias anglais. JR est invité dans de nombreuses capitales à afficher ses photos et fait la couverture de nombreux journaux. L’affiche d’Obama créée par Shepard Fairey restera le visuel le plus marquant de l’élection américaine. Blu sort son film d’animation Muto qui sera visionné plus de 10 millions de fois sur le net.
Même si il est souvent difficile de passer sous silence l’actualité des «stars du street-art», j’essaie au quotidien de surtout mettre en avant des acteurs moins médiatiques.

Le Groupe ekosystem sur flickr devient une source importante de photos pour le site.

Quelques artistes qui marqueront cette année sur ekosystem: Elfo, Alexandros-Vasmoulakis, Roa, Scheme_stylekonstruktor, Bastardilla, Chase, Rowdy, Cyclops,SweetToof, aec, waone, interesni-kazki, Seize, Alsacherie, Graphic Surgery, Sinboy, The Wa.

Repression and systematic cleaning policies are set up in Barcelona, it’s the end of an era. Berlin remains without a rival with its huge events like Urban Affairs that year.
Ekosystem starts hosting blogs. «Barcelona Style» under the impulse of Uri will describe this period of transition for Barcelona.
Discussions move from the forum to the blogs and will quickly move to so-called Social Networks.

The Tate Gallery organises an exhibition where Blu, Faile, JR, Nunca, Os Gemeos and Sixe are invited to paint over the huge facade of the museum. The media coverage is incredible. Street-art is everywhere. Every little action done by Banksy is relayed by every English media.

JR is invited in numerous capitals to paste up his pictures and appears on the cover of a lot of newspapers. The Obama poster by Sheppard Fairey remains the most striking visual event of the American campaign for presidency. Blu releases his animation movie Muto that will be viewed more than 10 million times on the net.

Even if it’s difficult not to speak about the recent activities of “street-art stars”, I try on a daily basis to put forward less popular actors.

The ekosystem group on Flickr becomes an important source of pictures for the website.

– Les photos de graffiti reviennent en force sur ekosystem, j’y trouve souvent plus de fraicheur et d’audace que dans les productions étiquetées street-art.

Ekosystem à 10 ans, je suis content d’avoir assisté et participé à l’éclosion d’une scène artistique populaire et aux débuts du web grand public.
J’ai un peu de mal à abandonner ce site sur lequel j’ai passé énormément de temps, pourtant en tapant mes souvenirs de ces 10 dernières années je me rends compte que les premières années étaient les plus intenses et qu’il est surement temps pour moi de passer à autre chose. Je suis à l’heure actuelle incapable de dire ce qu’il adviendra de ce site dans les mois ou les semaines prochaines.

Un GROS MERCI aux très très nombreuses personnes qui ont participé à cette aventure à un moment donné et qui m’ont donné l’énergie et l’envie d’animer le site.

Ekosystem is now 10 years old, i’m happy to have assisted and having been part of the blossoming of a popular artistic scene as well as of the beginning of mainstream web.
I have trouble leaving behind this site on which I’ve spend a whole lot of time, nevertheless while typing the memories I’ve got from these 10 past years, I realise that the first years were the most intense and certainly it’s time for me to switch to something else. Right now i can’t say what will happen to the site during the incoming months or weeks…

HUGE THANKS to the very very large number of people who have been part of this adventure at one point or another and who gave me energy and motivation to take care of the site.

It’s a great joy to receive mail from a country not classified yet. Eastern countries, South America…The movement is spreading fast.

The collective projects are multiplying as we’re marvelled by the easiness that Internet provides us with for contact building. On ekosystem that year, a new collective project on the theme of access “Acces-s“, and another one against the war in Iraq: “No War In Iraq“.

Among the numerous collective projects of the time, the one that illustrates better the spirit of the epoch is the one of the Finders Keepers from London. Artists hide their creations (canvases, stickers and other objects) in a spot revealed at the last moment, to be offered to the one finding them. This seems unthinkable nowadays when the public and the artists are much too aware of their quotation and the value of their creations.

– Barcelona is the rallying point for the whole scene, with a lot of informal meetings.

– Captain Rouget and Flying Fortress launch the “Stick Fighter II” project on the newsgroup of ekosystem. 5 years later, there are still new fighters coming out.

-Second series of posters by the collective “une Nuit“, with billboards from Above, Jean Faucheur, G, l’Atlas, Tanc, Vast, Popay, Ox..

-In the editorial of WorldSigns number 2, Stak first evokes the term: “Post-graffiti”.

–Woostercollective appears and will in the following years take a central part in the broadcast of the movement throughout the USA.

-Under the influence of Banksy and Stencilrevolution.com, it’s the great revival of stencils.

–Fotolog now enables anyone to put pictures online without any technical knowledge. Digital cameras are now the norm.

-Everybody looks for good ways to find printers and get plates of stickers out, everyone makes its own stickers and trades with the others.

-C100 publishes The Art of Rebellion, the first book presenting the effervescence of the 3 preceding years in Europe. Many others will follow.

The increasing fashion for graffiti, the apparition of websites that more or less do the same thing as ekosystem and the trade that is being set up make me feel like dropping the site. I take a short break when my son is born but the site starts back really quick. Even if I’ve now realised that what ekosystem presents has now become the norm, and not a really different graffiti, against the trend, any longer.

La galerie de photos dépasse désormais les 5000 photos et grâce à v3ga se dote d’un système de mise à jour moderne (plus besoin de rajouter des pages html manuellement)
C’est la joie à chaque fois que je reçois un mail d’un pays encore non référencé. Pays de l’est, Amérique du sud… Le mouvement se propage rapidement.
Les projets collectifs se multiplient émerveillés que nous sommes par la facilité que procure internet à se mettre en relation. Sur ekosystem cette année là un nouveau projet collectif sur le thème de l’accès «Acces-s» et un autre en opposition à la guerre en Irak: «No War In Irak».

Parmi les nombreux projets collectifs de cette période, celui qui illustre le mieux l’esprit de l’époque est sûrement celui des Finders Keepers de Londres. Des artistes cachent dans un lieu révélé au dernier moment leurs créations (toiles, autocs, et autres objets) qui sont offertes à ceux qui les découvrent. Ça semble complètement impensable aujourd’hui où le public et les artistes ont trop conscience de leur cote et de la valeur de leurs créations.

– Barcelone est le point de ralliement de la scène avec de nombreuses rencontres informelles.

– 2ème série d’affiches par le collectif «une Nuit» avec des 4 par 3 d’Above, Jean Faucheur, G, l’Atlas, Tanc, Vast, Popay, Ox..

– Dans l’éditorial du numéro 2 de WorldSigns, Stak évoque pour la première fois le terme de: Post-graffiti.

– Woostercollective apparait et jouera dans les années qui suivent un rôle central dans la diffusion du mouvement aux USA.

– Sous l’influence de Banksy et de Stencilrevolution.com c’est le grand retour des pochoirs.

– Fotolog permet désormais à tout un chacun de mettre ses photos en ligne sans aucune connaissance technique. Les appareils photos numériques sont désormais la norme.

– Captain Rouget et Flying Fortress lancent le projet “Stick Fighter II” sur le forum d’ekosystem, 5 ans plus tard, il y a toujours de nouveaux combattants qui apparaissent.

La mode croissante du graffiti, l’apparition de sites faisant plus ou moins la même chose qu’ekosystem et le commerce qui se met en place me donne envie de laisser tomber le site. Je fais une courte pause à la naissance de mon fils mais le site repart très vite. Même si j’ai désormais conscience que ce que présente ekosystem est devenue la norme et non plus vraiment un graffiti différent et à contre courant.

Progressively the artists featured on ekosystem do not systematically come from a graffiti background and directly start with posters or stencil. Some of them come from the Fine Arts and only experiment into the street for very short periods of time.

The street becomes a mean to get fame fast for young graphic designers and Fine Arts students.

The ekosystem calendar , with incredible contributions from East Eric, Alexone or Erosie will remain the last collective project to be remembered on the site. From the position of an actor, ekosystem has now become a means to relay the numerous initiatives of each and everyone around. The excitement that came with the creation of a collective movement disappears. The most talented, clever and/or hard-working try to get a living out of their art, the others progressively retire.

– Hosting of a first PDF magazine : Pornofitti by Ernioe from Poland. Others will follow.

– Jerome -g- Demuth is present on the billboards of the capital with his photographs and is as well the main master of ceremonies on ekosystem’s newsgroup.

– In July the Nusign exhibition gathers for the very first time a great number of actors from all over the European scene ( Miss Van, Flying Fortress, Stak, Influenza, Akim, 108, HNT, El Tono…)

– The SNCF sews Graff-it ! magazine for having published painted train wagons, which motivates me to transfer the site to Switzerland.

– A couple artists that have left their mark on ekosystem that year : Halieutik, Ernioe, Koralie, Mezzoforte, Pmh, Berzerk, Adam Infanticide, Bibifoc, blanc bec, No logo crew, Specio, Tv Boy, Apl, AB1, 36, Pom, Ge, Joos, Bob Usine, Reyes del Mambo, Crustea, Middle Class, Tika, Sqon…

Progressivement les artistes présentés sur ekosystem n’ont plus systématiquement un background graffiti et font directement des affiches, des pochoirs ou autres. Certains sont issus des Beaux Arts et n’expérimentent la rue que pour des périodes très courtes.
La rue devient un moyen de se faire remarquer rapidement pour de jeunes graphistes et étudiants des Beaux Arts.

Le Calendrier ekosystem avec de superbes contributions d’East Eric, Alexone ou Erosie restera le dernier projet collectif marquant du site. D’acteur, ekosystem est désormais devenu un simple relais des nombreuses initiatives de chacun. L’exaltation de créer un mouvement collectif disparait. Les plus talentueux, bosseurs, et/ou malins essaient de vivre de leur art, les autres prennent progressivement leur retraite.

– Hébergement d’un 1er PDF mag: Pornoffiti par Ernioe de Pologne. D’autres suivront.

– Jérome -g- Demuth est présent sur les 4 par 3 de la capitale avec ses photos et est le principal animateur du forum d’ekosystem.

– En Juillet l’exposition Nusign rassemble pour la 1ère fois à Paris un grand nombre d’acteurs de la scene européenne (Miss Van, Flying Fortress, Stak, Influenza, Akim, 108, HNT, El Tono…)

Je ne me souviens plus exactement de quand date la première mise en ligne du site. C’était vers la fin de l’année 1999, je venais d’arrêter le graffiti après 10 années de pratique. Le site était pour moi un moyen de conclure cette période et de passer à autre chose, je n’imaginais pas que contrairement à mon idée initiale ça allait maintenir mon intérêt pour 10 années de plus. Je n’ai pas acheté directement le nom de domaine ekosystem.org. Mon premier hébergeur était un hébergeur associatif gratuit altern.org. Le site au départ comprenait des photos de trains, et quelques graffitis un peu hors normes pour l’époque principalement des Bordelais comme Cha ou Sobre. Je crois qu’autour de moi assez peu de gens avaient accès à internet.

Il existait à l’époque quelques sites de graffiti; des acteurs majeurs comme aero.fr en France, et puis Graffiti.org bien sur, et une nuée de «petits» sites, mais la plupart n’avaient pas de critères de sélections, ils présentaient les quelques rares photos dont ils disposaient en numérique. Les photos étaient principalement scannées et de petit format, les connections internet rapides n’étant pas encore vraiment accessible et la photo numérique était balbutiante.

Les seuls sites qui permettaient de voir autre chose que du graffiti classique étaient celui d’Obeythegiant et les gens qui gravitaient autour de lui comme Acamonchi ou Do the math.
Space Invader faisait aussi parti des précurseurs et Miss Van avait quelques fans qui avaient créé des pages en son honneur.

L’idée du site était de montrer des choses que l’on ne voyait ni sur le web ni dans les magazines: des trains du sud-ouest et du graffiti «émancipé du hip-hop».

I can’t exactly remember when the website was put online for the first time. It was around the end of 1999, I just had stopped doing graffiti after 10 years of practise. The site was a way for me to put an end to this period and to go on to something else. Contrary to my original idea, I couldn’t imagine it would maintain my interest for another decade. At first I didn’t buy the domain name “ekosystem.org”. My first host was a free associative website host, altern.org . The site in its original form contained train pictures and some graffiti deviating from the norm , mainly people from Bordeaux like Cha or Sobre. I guess that around me few people had access to the Internet.

At the time there were a few graffiti sites – main actors like aero.fr in France and of course Graffiti.org, and a swarm of “small” sites, but most of them had no criteria of selection and only displayed the few digitised pictures they had under hand. Most of the time the pictures were scanned and small format, since fast Internet connections weren’t really available and digital photography was in its infancy.

The only sites that allowed anything else than classical graffiti to be seen were the ones of Obeygiant and of people gravitating around him like Acamonchi or Do the math.
Space Invader was amongst the precursors as well, and Miss Van had a few fans that had created fan pages in her honour.

The idea of the site was to show things that wouldn’t be seen elsewhere on the web or in magazines : southwestern trains and graffiti «emancipated from hip-hop».

La SNCF n’arrive plus à nettoyer les TER du sud-ouest. La quasi-totalité des wagons sont peints. Le site présente une dizaine de nouvelles photos de trains par semaine ce qui pour l’époque était un rythme de mise à jour élevé. Les mises à jours étaient fastidieuses, et l’ajout d’une photo nécessitait la saisie de quelques lignes d’HTML.
Mon camarade de graffiti des années 90 et de demo-coding de la fin des années 80: Julien v3ga me rejoint pour faire vivre le site, il mitraille le réseau TER d’aquitaine et va très vite s’occuper de toute la partie technique du site et ce jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Le site recevait une centaine de visiteurs par jour. Ça nous paraissait énorme.
En parallèle j’essaie de mettre en avant des gens faisant des choses un peu différentes depuis un certain temps comme La Mano, Hnt, Jace, Miss Van, le 33 (east eric), Vania ou Space Invader et une mini scène se crée progressivement autour d’ekosystem. Des artistes comme Krisprolls, 108, Cre ou Santy se reconnaissent dans les travaux présentés sur ekosystem et commencent à m’envoyer des photos (souvent par la Poste pour que je les scanne)

La scène Parisienne est incroyablement inspirée et inspirante avec Space Invader, Hnt, Zevs, Stak, Andre…

Pas mal d’articles commencent à paraître sur Sheppard Fairey, le mot street-art n’existe pas encore, pas mal de gens commencent à faire des affiches et des stickers sous l’influence du géant californien, on parle alors de «propaganda». Akayism fera parti de ceux qui ont marqué cette époque en Europe.
Space invader commence à être invité dans différents festivals dans le monde.

Stickernation.net apparaît, super design, super code, il accompagnera l’explosion des stickers au Pays Bas.
Naissance du site d’El Tono qui avant d’être un site centré sur son travail, présentait un panorama de la scène du moment.

The SNCF (the national french train company) can’t manage to clean the regional trains in the south-west anymore. Almost all waggons are painted. The site displays a dozen of fresh train pictures every week, which for the time was a high update rhythm. The update process was tiresome, and the addition of a new picture needed the attachment of a few lines of HTML. My graffiti partner from the 90’s and demo-coding partner from the late 80’s, Julien v3ga joins in so that the site can continue to live, he strafes the regional network of our region and very soon takes control of all the technical part of the site’s management, and is still doing it today. The site had a hundred of visitors a day, which at the time seemed huge for us.

In parallel, I try to put forward the works of people who have been doing slightly different things for some time, such as La Mano, Hnt, Jace, Miss Van, le 33 (east eric),
Vania or Space Invader, and progressively a small scene takes shape around ekosystem. Artists like Krisprolls, 108, Cre or Santy identify themselves with the work presented on ekosystem and start sending me pictures, often by post mail so that I can scan them.
The Parisian scene is incredibly inspired and inspiring, with Space Invader, Hnt, Zevs, Stak, Andre…
Honet Paris 2000
Quite a few articles are published about Sheppard Fairey, even though the word “street-art” doesn’t exist yet, people start making posters and stickers under the influence of the Californian giant, and the word “propaganda” is employed to define this trend. Akayism will be part of the ones who have left their mark in that period of time in Europe.

Stickernation.net appears, with super design and super coding, and accompanies the sticker explosion in the Netherlands.
Birth of El Tono’s site, which before being centred around his work, presented a panorama of the scene at that time.

Le site commence à prendre de l’ampleur je me décide à acheter le nom de domaine ekosystem.org et à prendre un vrai hébergement payant. Les 1eres interviews font leur apparition (Space Invader 108, Cha…).
Ekosystem devient le point de rassemblement pour toute une scène européenne émergeante. Quelques noms parmi les gens actifs à l’époque ( 108, Alexone, Bild, Bo130, Crusty, El Euro, Etron, Ewos, Flying Fortress, Gomes, Krsn, Pez, The Plug, Santy, Stirb, Supakitch, Wood…)
Le simple fait de peindre autre chose que des lettres, de ne pas signer son travail ou d’utiliser un autre outil que la bombe nous paraissait -de façon assez naïve- incroyablement frais et inventif.
Sous l’influence de La Mano, Suso33, Osta ou de Stak, c’est la mode des pictogrammes, un symbole à la place d’un tag.

2001

The site is becoming more and more extensive and I decide to buy the domain name ekosystem.org and take a true paying web hosting. The first interviews appear (Space Invader, 108 and Cha)
Ekosystem becomes the gathering point for a great part of the emerging European scene. A few names amongst the active ones of the time (108, Alexone, Bild, Bo130, Crusty, El Euro, Etron, Ewos, Flying Fortress, Gomes, Krsn, Pez, The Plug, Santy, Stirb, Supakitch, Wood…)
The simple fact of painting something else than letters, not signing one’s work or use another tool than spay paint seemed to us -quite naively- incredibly fresh and inventive.
Under the influence of La Mano, Suso33, Osta or Stak, it’s the fashion for pictographs, a symbol instead of a tag.

Les réseaux sociaux n’existant pas encore, ekosystem était le passage obligé pour rencontrer et découvrir d’autres artistes. Le mot street-art commence à être utilisé ici et là, même si il est rejeté par la plupart des acteurs. Il sera cependant adopté faute de mieux dans les mois qui suivent et deviendra synonyme de graffiti branché.
Je met en place un forum de discussion sur le site et sous l’influence de Santy, Cha & Mr Poulet, on lance un projet collectif appelé: Don’t copy me. Une trentaine d’artistes (principalement européens mais aussi quelques autres d’ailleurs comme Above) m’envoient une production sur le thème de la copie. L’enthousiasme est réel, on commence à se rendre compte de la puissance d’internet pour connecter les gens et de la vitalité de la scène. C’est un vrai succès, le début d’une certaine visibilité, pas mal d’articles dans la presse sont publiés et le slogan sera même repris par une chaîne de magasin de vêtement en France.

Quelques fanzines photocopiés apparaissent, encore une fois la facilité avec laquelle Internet nous permet de réaliser des projets rapidement avec des intervenants vivants à des milliers de kilomètres nous semble incroyable.

Urban Discipline à Hambourg rassemble les acteurs les plus intéressants du moment Stak, Honet, Andre, Zedz, Alexone, la Mano et pour sûrement la seule et unique fois Banksy à visage découvert pour une exposition collective.

Quelques artistes qui marqueront cette année sur ekosystem: TT crew, Ewos, Erosie, Dave Warnke, Shes54 aka bfree, Hoernchen, Gil Bensmana, Pixel Phil aka OPT, BO130 & Microbo.

– Un nouveau site Parisien va rassembler la scène parisienne pendant quelques temps: Armvr.net
– Le collectif «Une Nuit» recouvre les 4 par 3 parisiens d’affiches de François Morel, Sich, Gilbert, Space Invader, Stak, Osta, El Tono, La Nuria, Parapluie, Hermes, Miss Van, Hondo, L’Atlas…

– Le Scrawl collective publie un premier livre sur les stickers: Stick’em up.
– Stickit.nl prend le relais de stickernation qui peine à sortir une nouvelle version de leur site. Les pays bas sont maintenant recouverts depuis plusieurs mois de stickers de Space3, Influenza, Sol crew, Ewos, Wood…
– Sortie du magazine WorldSigns dirigé par Olivier Stak.

2002

Most of the social networks don’t exist yet, ekosystem was the necessary stop to meet and discover other artists. The word street-art starts being used here and there, even, if rejected by most of the actors. It will nevertheless be adopted during the following months in the absence of anything better, and become synonymous with trendy graffiti.

I organise the news group on the site, and under the influence of Santy, Cha & Mr Poulet we start a collective project called “Don’t copy me” . Some 30 artists ( Mostly European but others as well from elsewhere like Above) send me a production on the theme of copy. The enthusiasm is real, we start realising the power of the Internet in connecting people and the vitality of the scene. It is a real success, the start of some visibility for all involved, a couple articles are published in the press and the slogan will even be taken afterwards by a clothing company in France.

A few photocopied fanzines appear, and once again the easiness with which Internet enables us to realise projects rapidly and with contributors living thousands of miles from us seems incredible.
Urban Discipline in Hamburg gathers the most interesting actors of the moment, Stak, Honet, Andre, Zedz, Alexone, la Mano and perhaps for the one and only occasion Banksy openly painting, for a collective exhibition.

-The Scrawl collective publishes a first book on stickers: Stick’em up.

-Stickit.nl takes the relay of Stickernation, which has trouble releasing a new version of their site. The Netherlands are now covered, since a few months, with stickers from Space3, Influenza, Sol crew, Ewos, Wood…
-Release of WorldSigns magazine directed by Olivier Stak.
